Due to intense fighting in Kachin and Shan State, more than 100,000 Christians have been forced to flee their homes and are living in camps where they are denied access to food and healthcare.
Churches are monitored and church leaders are targeted. Christians often meet in homes or business places because land grabbing from Christians is a problem.
Children of Christians face discrimination by teachers and bullying by other children.
There is an increasing emphasis on Buddhism, to the exclusion of all other minorities. And the continuing war against insurgencies affects, among others, predominantly Christian Kachin, Shan and Karen States. This war goes widely unnoticed, eclipsed by the widely publicized situation of the Rohingya. The actions against churches in northern Shan State by the Communist United Wa State Army contributed to a continued high level of violence.
Communities that aim to remain "Buddhist only" make life for Christian families impossible by not allowing them to use community water resources. Non-traditional church groups experience opposition, too, especially in rural areas, or if they are known for proselytizing. The government tries to act against radical Buddhist monks, but sends mixed signals: In the past year, it became even clearer that radical monks enjoy the support of the army.
Myanmar’s score increased 2 points, but the country went down 1 rank. Partly this is because the violence score decreased slightly, even as scores in other spheres of life increased. Due to ongoing fighting, especially in Kachin and Shan States, it is very difficult to obtain accurate reports on faith-based attacks against Christians and on churches attacked, even though fighting in Kachin State has died down in recent months.
Another reason for the drop by 1 rank: Algeria leapfrogged Myanmar on the list.
With the help of its local partners, Open Doors strengthens persecuted believers in Myanmar through:
Lord Jesus, we lift our church family in Myanmar to You. Please protect and provide for all believers who are displaced. Refresh and restore the vision and futures of the young people there. Help Your church to stand firm amidst the turmoil, and bring peace to Myanmar.

De varme solstrålene steker over en søvnig by med trange gater fylt av gult støv. Her ligger et lite hus laget av bambus og annet treverk, omgitt av grønne petai-trær. Mennesker i sine fineste klær samles til søndagsgudstjeneste.
