Christians are experiencing an increase in violence and hostility, especially those who openly share their faith. Believers from a Muslim-background particularly suffer the trauma of rejection and intimidation from their families. Traditional and cultural norms mean that many Christian women and girls are subjected to sexual abuse, forced marriage, under-age marriage, and are denied access to modern education. Some kidnapped missionaries are still being held hostage.
When radical Islamic groups took control of the northern part of the country in 2012, churches were burned down and Christians fled. Some Christians and congregations have returned to the north under police protection, but they still live under the threat of attack by Islamic militants. Evangelistic activities in the north are especially risky and could lead to being attacked by radical Muslims. Christian missionaries operating in Mali also live under the constant threat of abduction.
The 2-point decrease in the total score is due to the lower score in violence. This does not mean there was less violence, but as the violence became complicated and also ethnic-based, it was difficult to untangle religious-based violence from ethnic-based violence.
Several other countries, whose scores increased, rose above Mail in the rankings.
OD has been involved in Mali since 2013 following the Tuareg rebellion that was hijacked by Islamic militants. In partnership with the local Church, OD’s vision is for Christians to understand persecution and know how to respond to it Biblically, that church leaders increasingly provide discipleship to their members, that pastors are increasingly are nurtured into servant leaders and that Christians have a Christian worldview when it comes to economics.
